Originally known as “Venice of America,” Venice was founded by tobacco magnate Abbot Kinney in the early 20th century. The area, which was once marshy, was transformed into a seaside resort town, its streets lined with Venetian-style buildings. Gondolas carried passengers in canals that meandered throughout the town. An amusement pier was also constructed, which generated a lot of buzz that made Venice a tourist attraction.
